Oscar-ology: The (New) First Awards of the Year

The Oscar season offically began yesterday, with the announcement of the nominees for the Golden Satellite Awards, who have shrewdly moved their announcement date up in advance of the National Board of Review so as to garner more attention for their (admittedly minor league) awards. The Satellites are unique in that they have six nominees per category, and seemingly thousands of categories...thus, it's more interesting to see who got left OUT, rather than who got in.

On that score, I'm most pleased by Frozen River, The Visitor, WALL-E, Reprise and Slumdog Millionaire's nice showings, and the individual mentions for Richard Jenkins, Viola Davis, Michael Shannon, and A.R. Rahman. There seems to be a pretty clear omission of the Australia cast and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button in general. Surprises: no Best Picture for The Dark Knight or Doubt, no Sam Mendes for Revolutionary Road.

What do you see that intrigues you?
