The Sondheim Scene

There's an illuminating podcast on the work of Stephen Sondheim over at NYT, running in conjunction with the release of The Story So Far..., Nonesuch's new boxed-set retrospective of the composer's work. Four of Sondheim's most famous songs -- "The Ladies Who Lunch" (Company), "I'm Still Here" (Follies), "Pretty Lady" (Pacific Overtures), and "Agony" (Into the Woods) -- are discussed in a fascinating commentary track by Sondheim's longtime conductor and collaborator, Paul Gemignani. A legend in his own right, it's pretty cool to hear his thoughts...especially as it comes on the eve of Sondheim's new opus, Road Show, which begins previews at the Public Theater next week.
