Stage Addiction: Legally Blonde, Out Of Peroxide

Another one bites the dust. Anyone seeing a trend? The musicals closing in almost daily announcements (Xanadu, Title of Show) are all frothy comedies, well past their newness, and averaging below 60% capacity week-to-week. By this logic, I'd suggest that the casts of Spamalot, Hairspray, and maybe even Avenue Q should be concerned. There's no evidence that Broadway can support this many shows in a downturned economy.

Who's probably excited? Arthur Laurents, who may now see an unimpeded path to getting his new variation on West Side Story into the Palace by February. (That, in turn, will free up the Nederlander for the revival of Hair around the same time.) That is, assuming the finances for both shows remains rock-solid...hardly a given in this economy.

Maybe we can all breathe a heavy sigh of relief, at least in one regard -- after multiple delays and two years, the renovated TKTS booth will reopen in Times Square on October 16. Hopefully, there will still be people to buy.

Lest we get too depressed, however, keep in mind...there's always fabulous new musicals coming down the pike.
