McCain: The Republican Who Hopes You Don't Notice He's Republican

John and Cindy McCainImage by NewsHour via Flickr I couldn't bear to watch a single minute of the Republican convention -- believing, as I do, that stress kills and I don't want to die young and pretty -- but as I understand it, McCain didn't do too well last night. I'd love to hear from those of you who managed to watch it (and survived).

It also sounds like Sarah isn't quite getting the bounce from independents that McCain might have hoped...to quote the polling squad at ABC News, her presence seems to be "a wash" politically. Other than helping shore up the Republican base -- and really, where else were they going to go? -- she isn't moving anyone else to their cause, and a significant majority doubt she's got the skills to do the job. (Congrats to the Hillary Clinton supporters, for ignoring a cynical ploy when they see one.)

This will be my last post on Palin, by the by...she's gotten far too much media love in the week, and is not being held to the standards of any other candidate. It's the most insidious kind of sexism: if you criticize her, you're being a sexist, but if you leave her inexperience and troubling policy positions untouched, you're damning the country to oblivion. So the best thing is to move on, since no one but evangelical freaks will be voting for her anyway. (Neither are Nancy and Ann Wilson of Heart, who I hope sue the Republicans' pants off.)

And here we go...with less than eight weeks, we've got debates, massive ad buys, a re-energized Obama campaign and what is sure to be a nasty turn or two by McCain/Bush. How do you think it's all going to shake out? Let's hear some predictions in the comments, people...speak truth to power! (The power, in this case, being me. Heh.)

Isn't it amazing what a visceral reaction the RNC invokes? I couldn't bear to watch it last night but I'm glad to hear he bombed.

"Keating Five" McCain also must hope people don't notice that he is senile.
