The Best News of the Week: Sarah Palin
Less than a day after the Democratic Convention, John McCain has given Barack Obama an enormous opening today by choosing Sarah Palin for the Vice-President slot. I researched heavily this morning, and can't find anything that makes sense about the pick:
But for me, this is such an obvious disaster I can help but think that rational fence-sitters will see Palin for what she is: an unprepared misfire. McCain may have just blown it today, for good.
- Less than two years as governor of Alaska, she's got the least governing experience of any vice-presidential candidate in history. (Those of you still clinging to the idea that Obama is experienced? Huh. Have you MET Sarah Palin? Obama puts her to shame.)
- She's a member of the NRA, an avid gun-toter.
- She opposes a woman's right to choose. Let me repeat that: she opposes the control of her own body.
- She's under investigation for trying to bribe government officials to fire her former brother-in-law.
- She's almost young enough to be McCain's granddaughter.
- She has absolutely no national profile or experience, has no history in global relations or the domestic economy.
- She is a former beauty queen (the 1984 runner-up for Miss Alaska). Prior to becoming governor less just 20 months ago, her biggest governing achievement was as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska (population 5,470).
- She is a social conservative. She opposes gay equality, and strongly opposes women's choice. I don't have verifiable info on the following, but I think it's easy to assume she'd like to end affirmative action, environmental efforts, and the rest of the socially moderate agenda.
- UPDATE: She also wants creationism taught in secular schools. Because Noah really did round up the billions of species on our planet, and put them on a boat.
But for me, this is such an obvious disaster I can help but think that rational fence-sitters will see Palin for what she is: an unprepared misfire. McCain may have just blown it today, for good.

She also supports drilling in ANWR. As the governor of Alaska. Kind of fits with the pro-life despite being a woman thing, actually.
This struck me as an incredibly cynical pick, for several reasons; the biggest one being the baiting of the disgruntled Hillary supporters. I think it's a total miscalculation on that front. She couldn't be more the opposite of Hillary's policies, as you mention. But also, it's not like the PUMA people are so het up because they want to see a woman, any woman, in the White House. They want Hillary and no one but Hillary. Sarah Palin won't do.
Still was funny to see an entire room full of Republicans collectively hold their noses and applaud a Clinton, though.
Can you say Victory for Obama/Biden!?
She is the best thing that happened to them.
Is this the reason they put the news out (dumbya style) on a Friday afternoon????
Makes you wonder!
what's also amazing is that she's under an ethics investigation about firing a commissioner who wouldn't can a trooper that was in a custody battle with her sister...um, ethics? how is this not a big issue?
I heard Palin once had discussions with Canada about fishing rights. Not sure if this diplomacy was on the federal or provincial level. I feel better now to have her run the country.
McCain is a gambler, old, in questionable medical status, and dangerous to the country and world at large.
Two words before you pop the corks on the champagne, folks: Dan Quayle.
And she evidently left her town in debt to the tune of $3000 per person.
Roxie, I'm fairly certain she can spell potato(e) LOL. More than anything, I would think that the PUMAs would be insulted. This pick is calculated at best and should be insulting to say the least. I'm sure the McCain camp's thought process was 'Oh, she has a vagina, all the disaffected Hillary voters will swing my way...why wouldn't they?'. I guess McCain is remembering the 70's a bit to fondly. Give it to Mikey, he'll eat anything. Hey Mikey! He Likes it!
Out of touch indeed.
