Actress Handicapping

Galactica Sitrep, Low Resolution and The Film Experience are all reporting that the following actresses are the finalists for Emmy nominations for Lead Actress. Five spots are open, to be chosen from...

Patricia Arquette, Medium
Glenn Close, Damages
Minnie Driver, The Riches
Sally Field, Brothers and Sisters
Mariska Hargitay, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit
Holly Hunter, Saving Grace
Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men
Mary McDonnell, Battlestar Galactica
Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer
Jeanne Tripplehorn, Big Love

The leading women of Lost, In Treatment, Friday Night Lights, Weeds and The Wire seem to be the major omissions, and although I wouldn't have nominated them, I'm surprised that there's no Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice, or Heroes actresses making the cut.

What is incredible about this list, though, is how clearly obvious the five choices are:

Glenn Close, Damages
Minnie Driver, The Riches
Sally Field, Brothers and Sisters
Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men
Mary McDonnell, Battlestar Galactica
and as an alternate: Jeanne Tripplehorn, Big Love

A really strong field, with career triumphs for Close and McDonnell (who should win). Now, who will actually be nominated on July 17? Here are my depressing predictions:

Patricia Arquette, Medium
Glenn Close, Damages
Sally Field, Brothers and Sisters
Mariska Hargitay, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit
Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer

Ugh. I think Hargitay is okay on SVU, but the role is hardly a stretch for her talents. I find Sedgwick's fake Southern accent to be shamefully terrible, and her acting depressingly overbaked. And the less said about Patricia Arquette, the better.

Let's hope for the best, shall we? Roslin For President...and for Best Actress.

this is the drama shortlist; weeds is considered a comedy

Weeds is actually in the comedy category. And Connie Britton probably fell through the cracks between lead and supporting even though she should just have won BOTH if it were up to me.

I really really really do hope Elizabeth Moss gets a nomination but I have a sad feeling Hollywood still has their fix on Sedgwick and Arquette for some reason. Blah.
