The Beginning (And The End) Of Fabulousity

Today is my birthday. Next week, this site celebrates its fourth anniversary...ancient, in the blogosphere. An elder statesman, a old gay troll wandering the halls. I'm thankful to have won some awards, gotten over 4 million hits, and been lucky enough to develop a committed readership of loyal fans and friends. And I can't think of any better way to celebrate these two major milestones, my birthday and ModFab's anniversary, than...to say goodbye.

It's time. It's actually beyond time. Modern Fabulousity has been an enormous part of my life, and a blessing in so many ways. But in the last year, the truth is it's become a burden, and putting it together has been increasingly difficult in terms of time, commitment, and desire. Whatever joy it gave me once upon a time has been gone for quite a while now, and other pursuits offline are calling: my playwriting, my photography, my city, my partner, my family, my life. It's time for me to be creative in other ways, get back to my art, get back to my non-internet life.

But for the record, I'm not shutting the site down entirely...that would be like cutting off my own arm, and I just can't bear the thought of that. (I still have the American Idol finale to blog later this week, you know!) It's quite possible that, occasionally, I'll jot a post here and there...more like what Nick and Damion and Tim do than the daily grind I've forced myself to maintain. I wouldn't expect more than a weekly approach. No more Monday Manscans or Friday Hot Guys, no more Top Ten Songs or Stage Addictions...at least for now. But maybe something else, something new and fun, when I'm feeling the burning desire to share some wonderful thing with you. Honestly, it's hard for me to imagine a life that doesn't include the ModFab Family. (My dream? I wish I could find someone, or someones, to partner with me, share in the writing and in the profits from the advertising. Then I would keep it going. I've often wondered why all of the talented bloggers I know, who like and know and respect each other, refuse to join forces. It's like we all reinvent the wheel over and over and over in isolation, rather than four or five of us having one enormous, kick-ass web magazine. But for whatever reasons, blogging remains primarily a personal, idiosyncratic enterprise, so I doubt anyone would be up for it.)

So the archives will stay open, and I'll be around, and maybe tossing out a fabulousity every now and then...keep your ModFab RSS feeds alive, see what happens. And if you're missing my daily features, may I suggest the following excellent substitutes:

If you're looking for angry, sassy rants about lefty politics...
The Perfect ModFab Substitute: Brilliant at Breakfast

If you're looking for slavish devotion to Kylie Minogue...

If you're looking for me elsewhere...
I'll be at Madshag.

Lastly...I want to say thank you, from a place deep within me, for your commitment to ModFab. The community that has sprung up around this blog has been a source of wonder and amazement for me, and it's touched me deeper than you'll ever know. Sure, in the last year or so I've been hurt and a little damaged by some of the commenters -- all you Hillary Clinton fans, consider your Obama-loving foe officially vanquished! -- but they are in a small minority. Some of you, like Will, probably don't realize how badly I was hurt by your words...you probably meant them with the best intentions. And most of the people here have been truly kind, supportive, helpful, funny, interesting, and above all, witty. I prize wit above all, and wish I had more to share.

And, until we meet again, my friends...

A million words I could write, but you'd still be wrong
Why don't we just stop holding on?

If I can't be strong
, then I'll go back to where I started from
What made you think that things would stay the same?
And what will you do when you're on your own?

Won't be long
, consider me gone...

I'm both surprised and not surprised--I hear you, about how the work of the daily blog can become a labor bigger than you'd imagined, and then a labor less enthralling than it once was. Thanks for having given us four whole years! I think I've been reading for nearly three of them. Thanks especially for having helped me not be totally out of touch with my own country (politically and pop culturally) while I've been away from it this year. And I owe you a great big other e-mail--which you'll be getting soon, I swear, I swear.

Oh yeah -- and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

oh i'm sad :( Still i understand more than most blogging fatigue. I think you're wise to keep the blog open and blog when you want. I know i'll still be around to read and i can't imagine that others would abandon you... Your site has been an absolute blast to read. Stay in touch dude and good luck with everything...

PS ~ thanks for the shout out! Even though it was randomly selected, i like to imagine i came first in that particular category :P :P

The blog-world will be a lot less fabulous without you in it on a daily basis. But I look forward to the golden nuggets of fabulousity that are still to come. As someone who has been a devoted, daily reader of ModFab for 4 years. I want to say thank you to you for bringing the joy, the conversation, the debate, the noise, and the funk to us all for 4 years. I love you. And happiest of birthdays to you my love.

Hey ModFab,
I totally understand your feeling a bit burned out. As someone who only started blogging at the end of September, I realize how much effort it takes to do it well.

As someone who only recently found your blog, through Steve on Broadway, I just want to let you know how much you'll be missed. I really enjoyed your stage addiction posts, your thoughts on the presidential race, and the Idol recap, even though I never watch the show! I think the best blogs are like a conversation. It should never feel like a chore. Please continue to post whenever you feel the urgency to do so.

Have a wonderful birthday, and I hope to meet you someday at a bloggers meetup!

Happy Birthday!!!. I'll keep the reader flowing and the link on my blog just in case.

For the record, I read and enjoy this blog and continued following it for the sheer enjoyment of your insight, intellect and humor, not to be a pain in the ass. I do believe that healthy debate and discussion are always warranted and should be treated as constructive criticism and nothing more. Heck, if it makes you feel any better, I'm already onboard with Obama. I believe the time has come to show full support and respect for the ultimate nominee of our party.

One last thing, thanks for the last post on AI! I don’t' know what I would have done without your final analysis of this season.

Take Care and God Bless.

How to count the zillion things I wouldn't even know about if it weren't for your blog? Or all the inspiration I have taken (and will still take) from your creativity and versatility and integrity in writing about all the things that matter to you, even when it means shuttling from politics to Idol at a moment's notice? Or all the laughs and insights and piques and curiosities and even friendships your blog has prompted over the years - plus all the movies, plays, music, and webpages you pointed me to?

I'll miss ModFab so much, but having it all on-line is like having the complete DVD package, and you know I'm a committed re-watcher and re-reader. I'll keep wearing my ModFab shirt everywhere, too, and look forward to the new chapters in your life, writing-related and otherwise. (And it's just insanely kind of you to imply that my straggly little blog is one that anyone should aspire to emulate, but *thanks*!)

And happy birthday: everyone says 29 is a great year. ;)

29 WILL be a great year! :) But I want to add my voice to the fray and say how much I've enjoyed reading ModFab over the last few years. You're warm authorial voice, you're boundless energy for the new, the yummy men, the FABULOUS theatre insider stuff has been like gold for me.

It's totally understandable that you're gonna shutter up the blog--the web life is TIME sucking and to produce the quality content that you produce must surely take you away from so much. So truly good health and good luck--

Keep me posted!

You are the best!

I'm proud of you for following your heart to make the announcement that appeared today.

I will miss this daily reminder of you but I'm glad you're making this move. And -- truth be told -- I look forward to witnessing whatever manifests next...

(See - I'm operating under the self-assuaging assumption that, for the next few months, your internet self will hibernate or form a chrysalis or set fallow and then you'll burst forth with something completely new/surprising/different... And if you don't? Well, I'm an awful prognosticator so I'm used to being wrong. But in the meantime this helps with the disequilibrium caused by your retreat...)

It's a great gift you're giving yourself, my dear. So happy happy and congratulations!

Happy birthday!

And it greatly saddens me to see the site closing. The and The Film Experience were the first 2 blogs I ever started reading with any sort of regularity, and it pains me to see one of the closing. Wish you the best, and hope that you continue to grace us with your presence as often as possible.

Well, as Francis Urquhart said of Margaret Thatcher, "Nothing lasts forever. Even the longest, the most glittering reign must come to an end someday."

I'm truly sorry to see you go, but I can certainly understand your decision. If it's no longer fun, move on.

I can't tell you how much this blog has meant to me. You've managed--brilliantly--to consolidate a huge and diverse amount of fascinating information in a single site. At times, the items on your blog were so relevant to my own interests that it felt as if you were writing just for me.

So how do I thank a blog that's taken me from crayons to perfume?

You'll be greatly missed.

Well, I'm sorry to see this, but I certainly understand. Blogging is a long, hard slog, and my messy house is a living testament to what it takes away from.

Thank you for the reference, though, I appreciate it.

And would you PLEASE go to work tomorrow (Monday)? Something was attempted to be delivered there on Friday and I think the retry is tomorrow.

Ah, my hero, my mentor and my friend: in the few short months that I have attempted (in vain) to keep up with the compositional pace you set, I have said to Catherine so many times: when the hell does he sleep??! Now I have the answer: sparingly or not at all...

I have no doubt that fabulousities will abound in the future: thy rss feed shall ever remain in my personal toolbar—and it shall bring me great comfort. But as someone who has also enjoyed your other artistic and personal pursuits, I'm glad those will be getting more of your time and attention.

In case you were wondering: I really set you up on a pedestal just so I could more easily look up your skirts... and btw: BRAVA! Happy Birthday!

Have fun, and take care ;-)

Fabulousity will be sorely missed, but never forgotten. Its bright cluster of stars will forever remain vibrant in the blogging heavens. I understand perfectly, though; my personal life has been in overdrive lately, so blogging regularly can often take what little strength and time we have. ModFab will never leave our hearts, though.

You know I'm going to miss your blog. A lot. Although I did see this coming (I'm pretty sure you told me this would happen), I'm still sad that it happened at all. Your blog has been so inspiring to me in so many ways, including the value you place so explicitly on wit. I value you wit, too. I appreciate all the hilarity, culture, and sense of identification and security with my homosexuality that you have provided me. I really mean that part about security and identity. Your blog is one of the things that made me proud to be gay (I mean, it's/you're just THAT fabulous), and, as I've told you before, you have been a primary role model for me in my gay life.

So, thank you for everything you've done. You are an incredibly intelligent, confident, and fucking hilarious man, and this blog has meant so much to me. Good luck and I hope to see you soon.
