ModMusic: Madonna's Hard Candy

Do any more words need to be written about Madonna's new album Hard Candy, which finds wide release tomorrow? By now, you know the talking points: collaborators Timbaland and Justin Timberlake worked overtime to make the Material Girl Matron relevant to twentysomethings; her last CD with an old-school, old-media record label; her infectiously caustic "4 Minutes" single. What's new to say?

Well, perhaps that the album is significantly better than "4 Minutes," with grooves less formulaic than one might guess on a such a crassly opportunistic outing. I like the midtempo house vibe of "The Beat Goes On" (featuring Kanye West, who is creating a new career in being the go-to rapper for diva pop songs), the quirky bounce of "Give It 2 Me" and "Devil Wouldn't Recognize You", which reminds one of a Ray of Light-era ballad. There's little here that's remarkably bad or, for that matter, remarkably good...and I'm guessing that's by design. After the sales dip of the (superior) Confessions on a Dance Floor, Hardy Candy is a clear attempt to regain market share and cultural currency. It should succeed, on both counts. Whether those are lofty enough goals for the Queen of Pop, I'll leave it to you to decide.

Well, finally glad this is going to be released today. Man, talk about the "Madonna Machine"...and you thought the "Clinton Machine" was bad...LOL. In all honesty, I'm very pleased with the album as a whole. While there are a couple of fillers, ultimately the album holds up. Obviously, this album is no "Ray Of Light", but it wasn't intended to be anything other than plain silly bouncy fun. A standout track for me is the beautiful "Incredible". My only hope is that it sees a radio release. If she just slows down the mix and get rid of the off kilter mess at the end, this could be a major hit.

Right off the bat I noticed how much better the production on 4 Minutes sounds than on that leaked version you posted a while back. Still don't like the song, but it's no longer offensive.

Wasn't Confessions something of a recovery for her in terms of sales after the very poor-selling American Life? I always thought THAT album was her real "sales dip."
