Idol, Au Revoir: Kristy Lee Cook Amanda

Were you gagging as hard as I was that Carly Smithson was in the bottom three last night? True, I've never been a big fan, but she had done especially well last night. Huh. Shows what I know. The evening was weird all around, as the off-pitch, teflon-coated Kristy Lee Cook avoided the ax yet again. It fell instead upon rocker chick Amanda Overmeyer.

In truth, the deck was stacked against Amanda from the start...women singing rock haven't fared well in the Idol seasons. (Even Kelly Clarkson originally sang R&B during her first-season win.) Amanda also suffered from a preternaturally cool personality, which plays unevenly with the warm, fuzzy sentiment the show's producers clearly prefer. I hope she'll go on to a long career, singing in bars and maybe even putting out an album. I won't know, because I won't be buying it. Now, are we all clear on who we're voting for next week? Yes?

The Final Sendoff: Amanda Overmeyer's "I Hate Myself For Loving You"

When you think about it, American Idol is quite brilliant. No, your phone calls are not counted to definitively find out who stays each week, but it is a great way for a major label to test out new talent. They get to analyze how the public responds to different artists and different genres. They've got you wrapped around their small finger...

I was mildly surprised that she got the ax. The same people who elected our fine president are those same folks keeping on that KLC. She looks so defeated. If next week is country week, we may get stuck with her.
