ModMusic: Temposhark

Ever since our longtime guru and friend Arjan started cheering for London's Temposhark many months ago, we've been jonesing for the release of their debut album, The Invisible Line, which hits U.S. stores next month. But this dramatic electro outfit is no overnight success; via limited-edition EPs and hot advance singles, Temposhark has been something of a buzz band for almost three years.

Listening to the advance copy of the CD this week, one immediately realizes it was worth the wait. Yes, there are the much-discussed collaborations with Imogen Heap, Youth, and Guy Sigsworth. But it's the band's minor chord urgency and rhythmic pulse that attracts the ear. This is the thinking man's answer to Hot Chip; you can dance to tracks like "Blame," but you should really sit and listen intently to it first, because there's much satisfaction to be gained. The accomplished tune was a recent finalist in the International Songwriting Competition (ISC), chosen by judges that included Macy Gray, Nelly Furtado, DJ Tiesto, and Robert Smith of The Cure.

Equally adept at intelligent dance-pop ("Joy") and balladry ("It's Better To Have Loved"), Temposhark may be an acquired taste for some; there's heavy lyrical metaphor bouncing off the sharp-edged musicality, and the two don't always fit easily together. (The Guardian described them as what would happen "if Kate Bush had shagged Marc Almond and spawned a monster that grew up listening to Depeche Mode's Violator.") I hear a different set of influences myself -- a little Anything Box, a dollop of Fischerspooner, and some old Howard Jones synths for good measure. But whatever the recipe for Temposhark is, one thing is sure...it's damn near perfect.

Temposhark are pure divinity. I can't help but chant 'Joy! Joy! Joy! everytime that tune comes up on my iPod - and that's a lot! I totally have an electro crush on them.
