R.I.P. Heath Ledger
So sad, so talented...so young. The Oscar-nominated star of Brokeback Mountain and the upcoming Dark Knight was found dead this afternoon, apparently of a drug overdose:Ledger, who was living in an apartment at Broome street, "had an appointment for a massage...The housekeeper who went to let Ledger know the masseuse was there, and found him dead at 3:26 p.m" with "pills strewn all around him."More details here and here. The housekeeper and masseuse tried to awake him and called the authorities when he did not respond. When the paramedics responded he was in full cardiac arrest and they attempted to perform CPR. It was unsuccessful, however, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The police say foul play is not suspected.

oh my cripes.
ouch.
It's not being reported that Ledger may have had pneumonia so you may want to revise your comment about a drug overdose. He did an interview a few months ago in the NY Times and was talking about having trouble sleeping. So those pills may have been sleeping pills.
Whether he died from sleeping pills or other pills, it is still an overdose. However, if it becomes reported that he merely died of natural causes, I'll be happy to change my post. But right now that's the word from the NYPD, and I'm sticking to that for the moment.
I hate to harp on this but the Times has already revised the police's story.
Can you send me the link? If it's been established that he died of pneumonia to a fact, I'll be happy to change it.
Just double-checked CNN, who says the cause of death is inconclusive, and that a full autopsy will require 10-14 days. The NYPD have not retracted their statement that drugs were present at the scene.
Since my post never suggested a definite situation, I'll stand by the original post. If it is proved in later days that he died of natural causes, I'll be happy to report on that at that time.
Someone who knows is speculating that Ledger may have been another untreated case of bipolar disorder. I think there may be something to that, given the many assorted pills that he was prescribed. I'm hoping to pull together a blog post on bipolar and artistic talent -- and how doctors are treating symptoms with pills (often to disastrous results) instead of the underlying cause. Stay tuned.
