R.I.P. Benazir Bhutto

I realize that this isn't a political blog, so I won't belabor this...but I felt the need for a quick moment of remembrance for Benazir Bhutto, the former prime minister of Pakistan, who was assassinated by bullets to the head as a suicide bomber attacked her campaign rally. Bhutto, the leader of a pro-American, pro-democracy opposition party and a champion of reform, was killed just two weeks before national elections that could have seen her replace dictator president Pervez Musharraf. The attack came just hours after four supporters of the other major opposition leader, former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, died when members of another political party opened fire on them at a rally near the Islamabad airport.

Seem more than coincidental? Musharraf, of course, is closely allied with George Bush...which means he's America's guy. But his human rights abuses and anti-Democratic policies make him an unwelcome ally to most Americans. Many of us hoped that Bhutto -- the first women to ever lead an Islamic country -- could bring stability, strength and freedom to Pakistan. That dream is gone. And Jill, over at Brilliant at Breakfast, reads my thoughts exactly. This wasn't random. Apparently Rod2.0 and Bhutto herself (from beyond the grave) think the same.
