NYT Top Ten Madness

The New York Times critics have put out their best-of-2007 lists, and they're fascinating. Of the film critics, only Steven Holden puts together an actual Top Ten (his #1? There Will Be Blood). His colleague A.O. Scott prefers to rank subject groupings rather than films, while Manhola Dargis avoids hierarchy altogether. (They stick Caryn James, who is low person on the totem pole at the Times, with the year-end wrap up article.)

Things aren't a lot more together over in the Theater section, where Charles Isherwood offers up an alphabetically-ordered list that includes Barbara Cook's performance with the New York Philharmonic (not exactly legit, Chuck) and the Metropolitan Opera. ("Ouch," replied Broadway.) Miss Thing Ben Brantley, he of the questionable judgements and abject lack of talent, leaves off his best-of list the one play that is topping everyone else's: August: Osage County. In its place? Christopher Shinn's universally panned Dying City. No accounting for taste, I guess...
