ModMusic: Emmy Rossum

Do I lose all musical credibility by admitting that I kind of like the new CD by Emmy Rossum, Inside Out? Checking out IMDB.com, it seems the young star of The Phantom of the Opera and The Day After Tomorrow has seen her film career stall to a complete stop. Maybe switching to music is a good career move; she's always had a beautiful voice, and there's a dramatic heft to her voice that isn't evident in her acting (to put it mildly).

Plus, I've always been a sucker for Clannad...and Rossum's album sounds like a pop variation on that Celtic easy listening combo. I think the comparisons to Enya are unfair, and as misguided as the comparisons to Imogen Heap. Sure, Rossum is layering her voice to create a choral sensation (some tracks have as many as 150 separate vocal lines!), and yes, it's hardly cutting-edge. But the songwriting underneath seems solid, and some tracks are truly transportive, in a don't-bother-me, I'm-meditating way. I'll take it, and take it gladly...especially if she agrees to stop making movies.
