Early Word From The Sweeney Todd Screenings

Yes, Lemonwade is trading on second-hand information about these early press screenings of Sweeney Todd, but still, it makes me very nervous. I know that Stinky and Nathaniel and others of you have commented in the past telling me to get a hold of myself, that Sweeney will be fine. But I'm not nearly as certain. The video clips look precious and (shudder) whimsical, the singing is competent but never more than that, and the lack of heavy Oscar campaigning by the studio (thusfar) seems odd. And it's a difficult piece, tonally, for a movie to manage in the first place. So yeah...we're still officially worried.

I couldn't find any video clips on the website link, only trailers, but it is awash in musical cues, including seemingly all of "A Little Priest." And you've been freaking about Depp? I have never heard a human sound more terrified of singing than our Helen, and as a result she is all breathy and all but inaudible, with absolutely no inflection or humor. Maybe the visuals will save it and her...and us.

OK. I'm confused.

ProTools made it possible for Britney Spears to put out, like, 4 or 5 albums now.

Surely JD & HBC can warble into a microphone once, and even if they sound like shit, some music studio whiz can make it sound great, and then they just need to lip sync in the movie.

Or is that not how it happens?

Not being lucky enough to have ever seen the show, I'm looking forward to the film! Keeping fingers crossed that it's good, because it looks like it might be! Hoping...
