ModMusic: Mark Ronson

There's something kind of marvelous when a music producer steps out of the shadows and up to the microphone -- Timbaland, P. Diddy, etc. But few have done it with such innovation and panache as Mark Ronson, the DJ-turned-producer who gave worldwide hits to Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, Christina Aguilera and Robbie Williams among others. His new CD, Version (out July 10 in the U.S.), twists the cover album concept on its head; the radical reimagining of tracks by Coldplay, Kaiser Chiefs, and Britney Spears is further developed by vocal collaborations with Winehouse, Allen, Phantom Planet and more.

By now, you've already probably seen the tres-cool video for "Stop Me", a cover of The Smiths featuring cutie pie singer Daniel Merriweather. But this merely gives a taste of the album's far-reaching strengths. Coldplay's "God Put A Smile Upon Your Face" is transformed into a infectiously catchy dance riff, and my favorite track, a thumping and tropical cover of The Jam's "Pretty Green," has fascinating layers of sound over its insistent beat. The most visionary album of the year? Maybe...but certainly one of the most entertaining.
