BlogPolling: The Top Songs of the Year (Thusfar)
Yesterday I asked nine musically-minded bloggers -- Arjan of Arjan Writes About Music, Robbie from Toons 'N' Tunes, Adrian and The Mysterious D of Bootie, Damion from Queering The Apparatus, Ashley of Radio Allegro, Brian aka Stinkylulu, Paul of The Zapping!, and Frank from OMG Blog -- for their favorite songs of 2007 to date. With six months to go until year's end, there's a lot of strong opinions already! Here's the ten that got the most collective votes from our panelists (in order of how many lists they appeared on...only our #1 song received more than 4 votes), followed by our individual favorites:
#10. Jay Brannan, "Half-Boyfriend"
Brian says: What a voice on this kid. I may have first delighted in Brannan through Shortbus's visual delights, but it's his aural gifts that have me on permanent crush.
#9. Gwen Stefani, "4 in the Morning"
Gabriel says: On an inconsistent and imperfect album, this contemplative track is the most perfect moment. We've all been there, haven't we? Well...I have.
#8. Mika, "Love Today"
Arjan says: Should be a Gay Pride anthem forever. It is simple. It is fun. It is incredibly hooky. No matter who you sleep with. (Honorable mention: "Love Today" remix by Spoon.)
#7. Kelly Clarkson, "Never Again"
Adrian says: Sure, it may be lacking the candy-pop hooks of "Since U Been Gone" -- but it's still a kick-ass kiss-off to an ex-lover -- only this time it's darker, angrier, and harder-edged. It looks like Kelly's inner rocker-chick is finally let loose. Too bad the rest of the album is a bit hit-or-miss.
#6. Amy Winehouse, "Tears Dry On Their Own"
Damion says: Because the entire album is flawless...and because this song perfectly captures Love to me.
#5. Beyonce, "Get Me Bodied"
Robbie says: "If the stars are aligned, this will be a huge summer hit in the US. I think it's a great party song, and Beyonce is turning into my greatest guilty pleasure!"
#4. Maroon 5, "Make Me Wonder"
Paul says: M5 came back with a song that was immediately very Maroon 5 and yet a little bit different and new, with strong disco influence running through the track that made it perfect for the introduction of summer and a song that has the legs to still be around in the fall. Plus it doesn’t hurt that Adam is love juice leaking lovely…
#3. Amy Winehouse, "Rehab"
The Mysterious D says: What can I say, this song is a song after my own heart? :-) I love the subject material, and the lyrics are soulful yet funny and charming. Bonus: My favorite version of this song is the Desert Eagle Remix. Get it here.
#2. The Gossip, "Listen Up"
Damion says: The Gossip rules my universe, and every remix of this song is stellar...and “Are You That Somebody?” is the B-side!
#1. Rihanna, "Umbrella"
Frank says: Either it's a touching sentiment or the most bizarre euphemism for a vagina in
the history of music. Regardless, it's infectious and I can't stop dancing to the remix. The Mysterious D says: Her voice draws me in, and I want to sing along (poorly) to every word. Even though it's a shameless pop song, it has a real beauty to it's message. Or maybe I'm just a gushy simple sap. Bonus: Party Ben just put together dancefloor gold using this track combined with an 80's General Public classic. I give you: Tender Umbrella!
