Idol, Au Revoir: Melinda Doolittle

The "Daughtry Curse" reared its head again on American Idol last night, as the undisputed best singer in the competition, Melinda Doolittle, was shown the exit. It's infuriating for those who admire substance over style, but in hindsight, it was almost a given; both Blake and Jordin have scores of teen voters and old grannies voting like mad, two crucial constituencies that Melinda didn't naturally fit with. Combine that with a general sense that Melinda was safe and the other two were in a close battle, and it all equals an oversized vote for the youngsters. On the positive tip, Melinda is already well-positioned for a big career....and losing the competition might actually be a good thing for a more mature artist. (Winning didn't seem to help Taylor Hicks out very much.)

So now, there's only one question left. Who's the next Idol? Your thoughts are welcome in the comments...
