You Tube of the Week: Cartoon Heroes

I got very depressed about the state of the world yesterday -- Gonzalez, Iraq, Virginia Tech, global warming, you know the drill -- and had a momentary fantasy about some hero coming to save us from ourselves. And that led me to think about music about heroism in its many forms: David Bowie's "Heroes", Bonnie Tyler's "Holding Out For A Hero", even Laurie Anderson's "O Superman." But the song that ultimate got me out of my funk was really unexpected: "Cartoon Heroes" by the European kitsch act Aqua, whose hit "Barbie Girl" relegated them to one-hit-wonder status in the late 90's. "Cartoon Heroes" was a witty satire on the idea of hero-as-savior, with the band fighting a Godzilla-sized octopus in the video. Maybe not great music, but certainly fun...and a good salve for our depressing times.
