Rumors From Cannes

The Cannes Film Festival begins May 16th, and the announcement of the films playing in and out of competition should be made any day now. Movie City Indie can't wait for the official word, and suggests that My Blueberry Nights, the new Wong Kar-Wai film, will be the Opening Night Selection, followed by a lineup that makes my mouth water: Francis Ford Coppola’s Youth Without Youth, Denys Arcand’s L'Âge Des Ténèbres, Todd HaynesI'm Not There, Joel and Ethan Coen's No Country for Old Men, Gus van Sant's Paranoid Park, Zavet by Emir Kusturica, Bela Tarr's The Man From London, Gaël Morel’s Après Lui, Catherine Breillat’s Une vieille maîtresse, and more. It has already been announced that Ocean's 13, Stephen Soderbergh's last installment in his jazzy trilogy, will play out of competition. Less certain, but still being buzzed about, are Woody Allen’s Cassandra's Dreams, Sean Penn’s Into the Wild, David Cronenberg’s Eastern Promises, Michael Moore’s Sicko and A Mighty Heart by Michael Winterbottom.

If this lineup were to hold up, we could potentially see one of the starriest red carpets in years on the Croisette, with appearances by Angelina Jolie, Jude Law, Naomi Watts, Heath Ledger, Cate Blanchett, Ewan McGregor, Colin Farrell, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Christian Bale, Julianne Moore, Jake Gyllenhaal, Richard Gere, Viggo Mortensen, Vince Vaughn, Catherine Deneuve, Tilda Swinton, Norah Jones, Natalie Portman, Adrien Brody, and Tim Roth (twice!). It's enough to make me book tickets for the Riviera right now...
