ModMusic: Matt Dusk

Consider the fascinating case of Matt Dusk, whose new breakthrough CD, Back In Town, has just been released. A sexy-as-hell jazz crooner with a Las Vegas pedigree, he's got a voice that sounds exactly like Sinatra if you close your eyes. And sure, he knows where his bread is buttered; the new album prominently features Rat Pack classics like "The Best Is Yet To Come" and "The Way You Look Tonight," and Broadway aficionados will thrill to his renditions of two My Fair Lady classics, "Get Me To The Church on Time" and "On The Street Where You Live."

But Mr. Dusk isn't quite ready to be an adult-contemporary antique like Michael Buble or Harry Connick. His first single, "All About Me," straddles the line between jazz and pop like Timberlake sipping a martini. The CD's opening track, "Back In Town," makes bebop swing accessible the way Big Bad Voodoo Daddy did a decade ago. I'm not sure a crooner can crossover in the Age of Irony, but if anyone can, Matt Dusk is the man.

P.S. -- The Canadian version of the album switches things up, losing "The Way You Look Tonight" but adding "April Moon" and a cover of "History Repeating." The European version goes even further, losing a version of "More" but adding a version of "Besame Mucho," now made famous by the artist formerly known as Sanjaya Malakar.
