Awards Season: The Lucille Lortels

The theater awards season officially began today, with nominations for the 22nd annual Lucille Lortel Awards, which recognize achievement by Off-Broadway productions. (The awards for Broadway will announce in about three weeks.) There's some interesting stuff here, including a dominant presence for Spring Awakening that nonetheless reveals its Achilles' Heel for the upcoming Tony race...no nominations for its young, untested stars. ModFab favorites Stuff Happens, The Internationalist and The Voysey Inheritance also did well; the near-total dominance by Signature Theatre Company in the revival category shows just how powerful the company has become in staging America's greatest writers.

The Lortels will be presented on Monday, May 7th at New World Stages (340 West 50th Street) at 6:30 PM.
