You Tube of the Week: Rescue Dawn

Werner Herzog is a god in the ModFab pantheon...maybe my favorite living film director. His movies, from Aguirre: The Wrath of God to Fitzcarraldo to Grizzly Man, simply look and feel different from those of any other auteurist currently working. There's a sense of electric humanity in his work, a visceral approach to character development that strips away the pretenses of traditional acting. Yeah, I'm a fan.

Herzog's upcoming drama, Rescue Dawn, looks on the surface to be a typical war flick. But paired with Christian Bale as his leading man (a perfect successor to Klaus Kinski) and striking out in real jungle locations on an already-legendary shoot, Herzog seems to have again found something unique in the experience of combat. You can't tell much from this trailer, obviously, but the word on the film is incredibly positive. It opens May 25th, and I for one can't wait.
