American Idolatry: The First Cut Is The Deepest, Theoretically

Au revoir Amy, Nicole, Paul and Rudy. None of you were destined for fame and glory, but all the same, I'm quite surprised by this first batch of eliminations. There were worse offenders here in Week 1. So what happened? Well, I think we learned two important things last night:

1) The youth vote is strong as ever. Teens Antonella Barba and Sanjaya Malakar were terrible last night, and both took a beating from the judges. Both SHOULD have gone home. But as we've learned from previous seasons, America doesn't like seeing little kids get picked on...and so they vote for them even if they suck. Remember the teenage mediocrities Kevin Covais, Anthony Federov and John Stevens? All made it to the later rounds (not to mention the sublime 4th place contestant Paris Bennett). This is a sign, I think, that Antonella and Sanjaya will be with us at least into the final 12.

2) Do not underestimate the redneck vote. Sundance Head sucks...let's just admit that. He screwed his way through Hollywood week, and shattered eardrums in Bolivia with his "Knights in White Satin" cover this week. So why is he still here? Answer: he is the red state favorite, a proud country boy who isn't like the other city slickers. Think this isn't important? I have two words for you: Bucky Covington. I have two more words for you: Taylor Hicks. And here's two more: rednecks vote. A lot. (Okay, that's four words.)

Am I onto something here, or full of it (like usual)?
