ModMusic: Spring Awakening

To say that the new Broadway musical Spring Awakening is different is perhaps the understatement of the year. Blatantly erotic and starkly delivered, it is wholly unique: a serious-as-shit rock show about teenagers having sex, often of the kinky variety. (When was the last time you saw the cover of a Broadway cast recording with the 'Parental Advisory' logo smacked on the front???) The young performers are astonishing, the production design exquisite. But the music is the real revelation.

Composed and exquisitely produced by Duncan Sheik, it is a rock record that happens to also be a show, instead of the other way around. The show is easily the most contemporary and important piece of theatrical pop since Rent, and maybe beyond. Here are two examples: the anthemic "The Bitch of Living" (a generation's theme song if I ever heard one), and the seismically beautifully "The Mirror-Blue Night". Do not make the mistake of missing it on Broadway, and make sure you pick up this record. 20 years from now, you'll still be playing it.
