Helena Bonham Carter...Can Sing?

Word's out that Beetlejuice director Tim Burton will hire his on-again, off-again squeeze Helena Bonham Carter to play the pivotal role of Mrs. Lovett opposite his onscreen doppleganger, Johnny Depp, in the movie musical Sweeney Todd. And I'm now officially worried. Carter's indisputably a great actress -- her performances in Wings of the Dove, Fight Club and Howard's End are brilliant. But Lovett requires a world-weary experience and significant musical chops. This is Sondheim, people, not Lloyd Webber. It's dense, tricky, and elliptical. It's got a complex structure that can elude even Broadway veterans (example: Vanessa Williams in Into the Woods, B.D. Wong in Pacific Overtures). Skeptical? Yep. A lot. Put this one officially in the file marked "troubling", and let's hope for the best.
