Motley Mix: If Only Joe Lieberman Drove NASCAR

- Will Ferrell's Talladega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby, opens with a $47-million weekend, a career record for the actor. Because really, who doesn't love brain-numbing, dork-filled comedy in a NASCAR environment? Gooooooo Red States!

- I know that Flesh and Breakfast will make me turn in my liberal card -- the Democratic Party isn't much interested in plurality of opinion these days -- but can I say that I feel sad about the whole Lieberman thing happening in Connecticut? Not because Joe's on his way out...Americans have a right to vote for whoever they want, the will of the people must be heard, yadda yadda yadda. No, what saddens me is that liberals are focusing all of their attention on cannibalizing a safe Democratic seat...and not focusing on beating the Republicans where it counts in Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, Missouri, and Montana. And there, we're starting to lose the real battle. OH, MT and MO are with the error margin; and taking control of the Senate is as far away as it ever was.

- How about some heroic stuff? Gay American swimmer Daniel Veatch of San Francisco set a new world record at the 1st World Outgames in Montréal, in the 200-meter backstroke in the 40–44 age category. A 1988 Olympian in Seoul, he was denied further Olympic glory by a hamstring pull at the 1992 Olympic Trials just ten minutes before his race. His new record of 2:14.83 breaks the previous record of 2:15.49 set in 1999.
