You Tube of the Week: Panic! at the Disco

In our humble but thoughtful opinion, there hasn't been a truly great rock era since the early 90's, when Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Red Hot Chili Peppers led a mini-revolt against the pervasive pop of that time. (To lovers of The White Stripes and The Strokes, we can only say...well, you tried your best.)

While the jury is still out on the rock bands of the new millennium, we have great hopes for a few: Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party, and especially the Las Vegas-based Panic! at the Disco. Combining a radio-friendly aggression with a Bowie-inspired sense of kitsch and glam, their early-'06 single "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" simply didn't sound like anything else out there; vocalist Brendan Urie was iconically interesting on CD and on video, and the band always made unexpected chord choices which worked beautifully. Their current follow-up, "But It's Better If You Do", similarly mixes electronics, guitars, and retro rhythms for an exciting, one-of-a-kind sound.
