Only a Few Hundred Days Left (Until Oscar Season)

Although you may not feel like films deserve awards these days (especially if you've sat through recent mediocrities like Superman Returns and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, oy vey don't get me started), there will be some movies released in 2006 that deserve a statue or two. For us, the awards season always begins with the Toronto Film Festival...it's where Brokeback Mountain really got off the ground in terms of marketing; along with Venice (which begins a week earlier), Toronto is one of the two early kingmaking festivals.

Toronto has announced its first four selections, including films by Bob Balaban, Michael Ian Black, and Agnieszka Holland. But the big news is the long-delayed All The King's Men, which will premiere at Toronto in September. The delays might signal trouble (it was supposed to be released a year ago), but get a load of this cast: Sean Penn, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Patricia Clarkson, James Gandolfini, Mark Ruffalo, and Anthony Hopkins. I mean...how bad can it be, you know?

Ten other fall movies I'm looking forward to, in order of release: The Science of Sleep, Babel, The Prestige, Volver, For Your Consideration, The History Boys, Bug, The Good German, Dreamgirls, and The Good Shepherd.
