ModMusic: [Title of Show]

When we get around to our end-of-year lists for the best theatre of 2006, we're sure of only one musical entry: Jeff Bowen and Hunter Bell's innovative and nutty [Title of Show], a musical-inside-a-musical that owes more than a bit to Sartre and Pirandello (if they were freakishly knowledgeable show queens). After running most of the spring (and picking up 3 Obie Awards and a Drama League Award), it's back for a limited time at the Vineyard Theatre...go quick, or you'll miss the best show in New York at the moment. (Love their blog, too.)

To prove my assertion, I offer up two examples: "An Original Musical," which steals the 1970's Schoolhouse Rocks format and makes hilarious hay of it. But even better is "I Am Playing Me," which features the gorgeous voice of Heidi Blickenstaff as she ruminates on...playing herself as a character. (The best song in the show, "Nine People's Favorite Thing," has become my personal theme song...and the bonus track is pure genius.) Confused? Read this and watch the New York Times audio slide show, and you'll understand everything. Or better yet, go see it.
