ModMusic: Sade in the Summertime

When New York finally settles into its lazy, sexy summer vibe, I always return to the music of one singular band: Sade. With only five albums in nearly 25 years, they've been a rare presence on the pop charts. But their sound -- an easy-on-the-ears blend of neo-soul, salsa, Caribbean rhythms, and jazz -- is just about as timeless as it gets. Vocalist Sade Adu is both beautiful and beguiling; her voice, an oddly melodic instrument, is seductive without sleaze.

To pop into the iPod before you hit the beach, I've chosen two lesser-known tracks; the bigger hits you'll find on their stellar Greatest Hits collection (and the videos of my favorites are below). "I Couldn't Love You More" is a blissed-out romance taken from 1992's Love Deluxe; "Somebody Already Broke My Heart" is a gorgeously painful ode to surviving, the best track from their 2000 set Lovers Rock. Turn up the volume, lay your towel out on the sand, put on the bathing suit and sunglasses, and pretend you're in Aruba. Accompanied by, say, Taye Diggs. Backrubs are involved. Mmmmm.

Download: "I Couldn't Love You More", "Somebody Already Broke My Heart"
Watch: "The Sweetest Taboo", "Kiss of Life", "Cherish The Day" videos
Then Buy: Greatest Hits, Love Deluxe, and Lovers Rock, Sade
