ModMusic: Andy Bey

Still feeling the summer vibe, I settled in today to the silky voice of Andy Bey, one of the great heroes of jazz for over five decades. Openly gay and openly HIV-positive, he began his career singing with Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington. His vocal trio Andy & The Bey Sisters were celebrated regulars at The Blue Note in Paris and other venues in Europe in the 50's and 60's, and recorded landmark albums for RCA.

Andy is still putting out records today, most recently the 2004 Grammy-nominated American Song. This track -- a truly exquisite rendering of Gershwin's "Someone To Watch Over Me" -- is from his comeback recording in 1996, Ballads, Blues and Bey. Both should be staples of your collection....especially for your personal moments of introspection.
