This Week in Modern Fabulousity - June 26, 2006

CINEMA: Superman Returns
June 28 - in theatres and IMAX nationwide
Perhaps you've heard something about it? The reviews are good (so far), and it's even got a "Is Superman Gay?" controversy fueling its press machine. (I doubt Supes is, but if you're knocking on closet doors, the movie does star Kevin Spacey, Frank Langella, and James Marsden...)

MORE CINEMA: The Devil Wears Prada and Strangers With Candy
June 30 and June 28 - in limited markets nationwide
If you find yourself standing outside a sold-out Superman Returns screening this weekend, consider an alternative joy -- two gently counterculture comedies. Amy Sedaris rocks as Jerri Blank, and Meryl Streep takes Prada from the mundane to the magical.

MUSIC: India.Arie, Testimony: Vol. 1, Life and Relationship
Pet Shop Boys, Fundamental
in stores nationwide June 27
The latest from Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, Fundamental, finally gets its U.S. release this week, and the gently-retro vibe of producer Trevor Horn makes it an elegant summer-at-the-beach vibe. For a more introspective vibe, grab India.Arie's latest, a disc packed with its catchy neo-soul grooves and self-help lyrics lifted from the latest Deepak Chopra.

opens June 28 - Roundabout Theatre Company - 111 W. 46th Street, NYC
Author Greg Kotis -- best known as the snarky brainiac behind the Tony-winning musical Urinetown -- has written a play about, well...a pig farm. "Where survival is a daily struggle, emotions run as wild as the herd, and getting your hands dirty is just the beginning." He's also got some of the best character actors in the business in his cast, including Tony winner Denis O'Hare (Take Me Out), Katie Finneran (Noises Off), Logan Marshall-Green (Dog Sees God) and John Ellison Conlee (The Constant Wife).

CONCERT: Audra McDonald in Concert
June 29 - 7pm - Central Park Summerstage - Free
Yeah. You heard me. Audra McDonald, for FREE. This opportunity only comes along once in a NEVER, so make sure you get your booty there early, preferably with a bottle of vino and a blanket to lay on.
