Philip Seymour Hoffman, Kevin Kline, More at the Public

The Public Theater 's first season programmed entirely by its new Artistic Director, Oscar Eustis, will take no chances...half the plays on the docket for 2006-2007 will rely heavily on star power. This fall Kevin Kline -- whose performances as Falstaff in Henry IV and Hamlet are already considered legendary -- will headline a to-be-determined Shakespeare play directed by James Lapine, while Ed Harris will star in Wrecked, the latest drama by Neil Labute (The Shape of Things). Tony winner Brian Dennehy (Death of a Salesman, Long Day's Journey Into Night) will make his Shakespeare in the Park debut in 2007 with a play still to be named. And 2006 Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote) will join John Ortiz and Daphne Rubin-Vega in Jack Goes Boating, a Labyrinth Theatre Company premiere hosted by the Public.

There are also stars of a more legit variety on tap: three world premieres (Durango by Julia Cho, David Henry Hwang's Yellowface in 2007, the experimental musical Passing Strange) and a New York premiere (The Singing Forest by Craig Lucas, who will reunite with his Tony-winning Light in the Piazza director Bartlett Sher). Most exciting, however, will be the New York premiere of 365 Days/365 Plays, consisting of 365 plays to be written over one year by Pulitzer Prize winner Suzan-Lori Parks (Topdog/Underdog). Tickets to this show will be free at the Public. (My guess...it'll run a bit long.)
