ModMusic: The Beautiful South

The best description I ever heard of The Beautiful South was classic and to the point: "They're like Morrissey...but in a better mood." Certainly, the band's spiritual force, Paul Heaton, shares more than a little in common with Mo; both rose to acclaim fronting seminal British bands (The Smiths and The Housemartins, respectively) while singing about the politics of working-class injustices and progressive causes.

Heaton's sense of melody is on full display in TBS's latest single, "Manchester," a perfect summer song for the thinking man's iPod. Catchy but not brainless, it's pop-rock that fits comfortably between your Green Day and your Ashley Parker Angel. (Don't pretend like you didn't download it. We're on to you.) We're also zinging out a great companion track, the immortal "Happy Hour" from 1984. Try not to dance in your chair.
