2006 Tony Predictions: The Women

Continuing our week-long series of guesstimations for next week's Tony Awards nominations, we take a look at the leading ladies of Broadway. (One clue: lesbians are everywhere.)

ModFab Predicts: Cherry Jones, Faith Healer; Lisa Kron, Well; Cynthia Nixon, Rabbit Hole; Julia Roberts, Three Days of Rain
Spoilers: Alison Pill, The Lieutenant of Inishmore; Francis Sternhagen, Edward Albee's Seascape

Yes, we said it. Julia Roberts. No, of course she won't win, but savvy industry wonks will want to thank the world's most famous actress for coming to Broadway. (It would be the congenial thing to do.) The rest of the category is rock-solid, packed with talented lesbian women (Kron, Nixon, and Jones). So who might steal the thunder from Julia? We think it could be newcomer Pill (a recent replacement in her role) or old guard Sternhagen (who has many friends in the industry). We personally would like to see them remember Kate Burton for The Constant Wife, but that show was literally a year ago.

ModFab Predicts: Tyne Daly, Rabbit Hole; Frances de la Tour, The History Boys; Jayne Houdyshell, Well; Martha Plimpton, Shining City; Zoe Wanamaker, Awake and Sing!
Spoilers: Lauren Ambrose, Awake and Sing!; Juliana Margulies, Festen

With most big productions this year not even having a supporting actress (History Boys, Caine Mutiny, Faith Healer, Three Days, and Inishmore are nearly or completely all-male casts), the competition is wide open for character actresses. If Festen gets any love at all this year, it will be for Margulies....the same could be said for Jill Clayburgh and Barefoot in the Park. But I seriously doubt either scenario. In a weak year, Wanamaker will probably clean up over the brilliant Houdyshell (whose show is about to close) and witty Daly (whose show has been closed for months). Another thought: with Wanamaker batting cleanup here, does Ambrose try for Best Actress instead?)

ModFab Predicts: Sutton Foster, The Drowsy Chaperone; Kelli O'Hara, The Pajama Game; LaChanze, The Color Purple; Patti LuPone, Sweeney Todd; Chita Rivera, Chita Rivera: The Dancer's Life
Spoilers: Maria Friedman, The Woman in White

These five definitely deserve the slots over their fellow leading ladies; so much so, in fact, that we'd be shocked to see any others on the nominee list. Sure, Maria Friedman's cancer surgery might get her a few sympathy votes for The Woman in White. And yes, Lestat's Carolee Carmello and Souvenir's Judy Kuhn have a lot of friends in the industry. And if anyone wanted to recognize Broadway: The Next Generation, they could throw a bone to Tarzan's Jenn Gambatese or Vivian Nixon, the lone bright spot of the otherwise turgid Hot Feet. But ModFab is pretty sure they won't.

ModFab Predicts: Donna Lynne Champlin, Sweeney Todd; Felicia Fields, The Color Purple; Cyndi Lauper, The Threepenny Opera; Megan Lawrence, The Pajama Game; Beth Leavel, The Drowsy Chaperone
Spoilers: Felicia Finley, The Wedding Singer

I'm not sure than anyone in this category should feel too safe, what with the blistering hard-rock ex-girlfriend Finley is playing each night to applauding audiences. Also in the mix are Allison Fischer, the memorable child vampyra of the terrible Lestat, and Tony winner Ann Dusquenay (Bring in da Noise...), who makes sure Hot Feet stays warm.
