Pulitzer Prognostication

Playbill says the leading contenders for the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, which will be announced Monday, are Adam Rapp's Red Light Winter, Rolin Jones' The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow, and Christopher Durang's Miss Witherspoon. I had the opportunity to see all three during their NYC runs (Rapp's play is still open), and I think it's a pretty weak group. If I have to, I'll take Jenny Chow, the most adventurous of the bunch. Wendy Wasserstein's Third has an outside shot, and might win a sympathy vote for the posthumous author...but the play was uneven, to say the least.

The best plays of the season are by Brits (David Hare's Stuff Happens and Martin McDonagh's The Lieutenant of Inishmore) and are therefore ineligible. So are plays that opened in 2006, like Rabbit Hole and Based on a Totally True Story.
