ModMusic: Never Can Say Goodbye

Welcome to our new Sunday feature, ModMusic, where we will do for tunes what Simon Cowell does for reality television...celebrate the medium while smacking it upside the head. Each week, we'll feature one spectacularly special, geek-tastic, off-the-wall track: out-of-print recordings, kitschy nostalgia, 80's new wave, rap delights, show tuneage, everything. Enjoy.

To kick us off, we're responding to the emails we received after the Mod Fab Six: Dance Remix article, asking us for more info on the queerlicious Communards and their remake of "Never Can Say Goodbye." It's a dream combo: Classic Motown meets the siren wail of Jimmy Somerville, mixed by New Jersey's Shep Pettibone, who had a brief stint in the late 80's as the international DJ of choice.

And if you think you've heard gay dance music before, wait until the 4 1/2 minute mark, when Jimmy goes off the grid and belts it out like Sylvester over Richard Coles pounding piano work. Heaven, I'm telling you.
