This Week In Modern Fabulousity - February 27, 2006

Flowers, drama, and races...oh my! The week's Hot Tips:

GARDENS: Even as all of Manhattan shivers under an unexpected cold snap, spring is right around the corner...as evidenced by the opening of The 2006 Orchid Show at the New York Botanical Garden. A perfect cure for winter blues, the show features over 8,000 orchids in hundreds of varieties, filling displays ranging from Palm Beach estates to lush rain forests. (All of it indoors, mind you...where it's warm.) In addition to the beauties on display, there are orchid-related tours, classes, discussions, and even a few to take home.

THEATER: Last season, John Patrick Shanley's play Doubt won every award imaginable: the Tony, the Outer Critics, the Drama League, the Drama Desk, the NY Critics Circle, the Lucille Lortel, and the Pulitzer. But it was only in recent months that Shanley revealed Doubt to be the beginning of a trilogy. The next play in the series, Defiance, opens on Tuesday with the same director (Doug Hughes) and producer (Manhattan Theatre Club). Can lightning strike twice? Are you going to wait to find out before you buy tickets? I didn't think so.

TELEVISION: Okay, yes, we know...the Family Edition sucked ass. (The Weaver Family...Jesus, who thought they were a good idea?) But The Amazing Race is returning to its Emmy-winning format for the new edition (beginning Tuesday), and it looks to be a complete return to form. Paired teams will travel to exotic locales like Sicily and Moscow for the first time; drama will be provided by hotheads like Lake (who is compared to Jonathan and Victoria) and hotties like Eric and Jeremy.
