R.I.P. Octavia Butler

Geek Philosophy sent us some very bad news today: Octavia Butler, legendary alternate-future writer and literary pioneer, died this weekend at the tragically young age of 58. A recipient of the McArthur "Genius" Grant as well as the Hugo and Nebula Awards, Butler crafted wildly imaginative novels including Parable of the Sower, Kindred, and Wild Seed. Whether exploring the history of slavery, far-flung future worlds, or the social struggles of her dystopian Los Angeles, Butler brought a unique perspective, as an African-American lesbian, to fields of literature long dominated by white heterosexual men.

I'm more than just a fan of Butler's...I'm practically a disciple. I've read every book she ever wrote twice, including her recent contemporary vampire reimagining Fledgling. It is unclear whether her next novel in the Parable series, Parable of the Trickster, will ever be published.
