Hillary and the Whiny Bitches

Today some gay "leaders" turned on Hillary Clinton over her support for civil unions (not gay marriage). Which is complete and utter bullshit. We all know what Hillary is doing...moving to the right so she's got half a chance in the 2008 presidential race. This is not news, this is politics...and smart politics to boot.

Something else that isn't news: Senator Clinton has consistently supported equality for gays throughout her career, and we've got no evidence to the contrary that she won't do the same in the future.

What happens when gay leaders say stupid things to make headlines is that it hurts ALL candidates who support a progressive agenda. I like Hillary, but I'm planning to support Russ Feingold in the primary. But I will NOT, NOT, NOT sit by and watch us replay the 2004 election. Any progressive thinker, of any stripe, should be supported; we'll need everything we've got to beat these bastards, and it serves no one to start disparaging our own. (By the way, the gays didn't turn on John Kerry, who has the exact same stance on gay marriage as Senator Clinton.)

It's a dangerous game we play; the Democratic Party, in an effort to reach the imaginary "middle" of the country, is reconsidering its support for gay equality. By whining and bitching about a potential candidate who only supports 98% of our issues (and let's be clear, gay marriage isn't even supported by 98% of gays), we only seem petulant, childish, and dispensible.
