October Blogger Mixtape: Nick Davis

I'm starting a new monthly feature here called the Blogger Mixtape, and the idea is deadly simple -- each month, I'll ask an incredibly talented blogger for their current favorite tunes, quickly commenting on why it's a must-have. Some may be of-the-moment, some may be all-time, and some may be thematically connected...it's up to the blogger themselves. Hopefully, it'll give all of us ModFabbers some great new blogs and some fab new music.

Kicking off our October Mixtape is Nick Davis of Nick's Flick Picks. Don't be fooled by the picture of that cute white boy on his home page; he's as funky as they come. A sublimely talented writer with impeccable artistic taste, I couldn't say enough good things about him. And with no further ado:

1. "Baby I Love You" by Aretha Franklin
You rarely go wrong with the Queen of Soul, but this is peak even for her.
Amazon.com - iTunes

2. "Shah with That" by Baby Dayliner
This kooky faux-rap is a total crib from my friend Dwight, who is way cooler than me.
Amazon.com - iTunes

3. "Working for the Man" by PJ Harvey
Still my favorite PJ track, if such a thing is imaginable. Which, by the way Peej, our birthday is next week! Candles, baby!
Amazon.com - iTunes

4. "Lamento della ninfa" by Claudio Monteverdi
Utterly gorgeous 17th-century madrigal, so I can lay down with the classicists.
Amazon.com - iTunes

5. "Change the Game" by Jay-Z
This jam blew the roof off the Ambassador Theatre when I saw Topdog/Underdog in August '02.
Amazon.com - iTunes

6. "Rad" by Smoosh
These preteens are so catchy it's embarrassing. Like 12 Hansons, minus the awkward adolescence.
Amazon.com - iTunes

7. "But the World Goes 'Round" by Liza Minnelli
Liza's big show-stopper from the emotional climax of Martin Scorsese's most underrated movie, New York, New York.
Amazon.com - No iTunes link, except some cover by some other beyotch.

8. "Mommy" by Missy Elliott
One of many songs I am obsessed with on The Cookbook. Missy got that good shit, that real good shit.
Amazon.com - iTunes

9. "Twilight" by Elliott Smith
Another genius Elliott, in an utterly different key. Haven't shaken this song in over a year.
Amazon.com - iTunes

10. "Outside Looking In" by Michael Nyman
The centerpiece composition from the score of Carrington, a strong biopic with Emma Thompson and Jonathan Pryce.
Amazon.com - No iTunes link
