Stopping The Nuclear Option

If you keep up with the news, you know that Republicans are currently considering "the nuclear option" -- a parliamentary procedure that would destroy the filibuster, effectively ending the longstanding ability of a minority to oppose legislation that goes too far -- as a way of forcing their hard-right judicial appointments through the Senate. It's a terrifying thought for any progressive thinker, who understands the need to preserve the minority's voice in government.

Tapped has a great rundown today on the number of Senators currently supporting "the nuclear option"...and it's not quite enough (yet). Basically, we need three of the following senators to oppose the option, who are currently undecided:

Susan Collins (R-Maine)
Chuck Hagel (R-Nebraska)
Dick Lugar (R-Indiana)
Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska)
Arlen Specter (R-Pennsylvania)
John Warner (R-Virginia)

If you live in any of the six states, I urge you to call your Senator or (easier yet) shoot off a quick email. Feminist Majority has an excellent quickie email blast set up for you (all you do is enter your zip code).

If they do this, the world changes forever...and not for the better. Even if you're a conservative, you have to see the long-term damage this can cause.
